Extra Medium | John Muse
This exhibition of Muse’s Works on Paper and several video installation projects derived from his collage techniques, was curated by Homay King and mounted at the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College.

The wall text reads:

Employing simple tools, a modest vocabulary of shapes and forms, and a variety of materials, artist John Muse (b. 1962) makes images that blunt swift decoding and probe the difference between abstraction and figuration. In the front of the gallery hang clusters of framed collages that invite the viewer to see and unsee familiar shapes and forms. Glimpses of their source materials—from auction catalogs, magazines, and elsewhere—occasionally pop through the densely woven abstractions. A vitrine houses smaller works on paper, journals, book jackets, and an album cover featuring Muse’s work. A wall-sized video projection to the right displays a looping film produced for the exhibition, showing details and close-ups of collage works as they pile up, new forms emerging and others receding as the layers of paper accumulate. Finally, the back of the gallery houses a temporary studio which Muse will occupy daily, continuing to create work throughout the run of the exhibition. The exhibition is accompanied by a broadsheet publication, a program of Muse’s short films, and interactive games featuring guest collaborators. —Homay King
