John supplied a work on paper for the cover of Judith Butler’s 2003 book, Undoing Gender. This work is drawn from a collection of small paintings Muse made in his copy of Maurice Blanchot’s book The Unavowable Community. The title of this work: Blanchot, page 18 of 46. The press designer isolated the central figure and floated it against white. The final design more or less matches this draft version: the open boxes are pushed farther from the center so they don’t cross the crease and into the spine.
