Not six inches from Finley’s studio window, a pair of hummingbirds build their nest in a red bougainvillea. Finley observed and recorded the birds for six weeks, from nesting to incubation to fledging, composing the video Protocol. Intercut between feedings, learning to fly, and the empty nest, a fog-shrouded radar tower rotates endlessly, receiving invisible signals. This colorless, mechanical structure was shot at the same time only a few miles away in San Francisco coastal fog.
